Root touch up vs eyeshadow

Madison Reed's Root Touch Up has been a beauty game changer, but i

Root Touch Up vs Eyeshadow - Which One Should You Use to Cover Your Roots?

Madison Reed launched its newRoot Touch Up in November and it has been getting rave reviews about the way it covers roots quickly and completely. But what about eyeshadow? Does it work? Award-winning hair color expert Susan Roberts-Cooper will help you decide.

Root Touch Up vs Eyeshadow

The Look

Root Touch Up is a lightweight powder formulated with micro-milled pigments. That means denser, richer color to hide those pesky roots and grays. Eyeshadow is simply not as dense, making it much less effective at blending regrowth with your hair color.

Because it’s designed for hair, Root Touch Up features a matte, suede-like texture that helps hair look thicker. Eyeshadow is lighter and often shinier, which can draw unwanted attention to those roots.

Root Touch Up

The Application

DIY solutions should be budget-friendly, but Root Touch Up is considerably more economical. It takes just a few swipes of the wide brush to cover roots. Because eyeshadow deposits less pigment, more is needed to provide the same amount of coverage.

Root Touch Up is formulated to be long-lasting. In fact, it stays in you hair until you shampoo it out. Compare that to eyeshadow that needs primer to last the whole day on your lids.

It’s about saving time as well as money. Root Touch Up arrives in a compact with a wide, short-bristled brush crafted for easy application to generous sections of hair. In comparison, the petite makeup swabs and brushes that accompany eyeshadow dab a tiny bit on at a time.

The Benefits

Every Madison Reed product is made to give women healthier options, and Root Touch Up is no different. It is free of titanium dioxide, which is “considered a possible carcinogen and is known to trigger an inflammatory response” according to Dr. Jan Hansen.

Unlike makeup, Root Touch Up stays put from shampoo to shampoo. It is waterproof and pillow-proof, so you don’t have to worry about roots revealing themselves in the rain or at the gym.

If you’re a fan of dry shampoo, you’ll enjoy the added benefit of Root Touch Up’s oil-absorbing powder. It freshens up second-day hair and adds subtle volume. Makeup can’t do that.

The Verdict

Eyeshadow belongs on eyes, not your hairline. Choose your Root Touch Up color now and see the difference on yourself!

Hair How To - How and When To Use Hair Gloss

Hair How To - How and When To Use Hair Gloss

Disclosure: This post contains affiliate links.

At some point, every great beauty secret becomes common knowledge. It begins with a few people who suddenly gain a radiant glow overnight. Friends compliment… and then ask how they did it. More people try the beauty secret and get the same reaction. Rinse and repeat. Until we don’t remember how we ever did without it.

Madison Reed Hair Gloss

Hair gloss is the beauty secret that people are discovering now. Also known as semi-permanent color, hair gloss actually comes in clear and tinted shades, all of which add shine and double as deep conditioning treatments. It’s incredibly easy to use, and it helps all hair types look and feel more beautiful.

In fact, the versatility of hair gloss is why people get confused. Madison Reed wants to help you discover this brand new beauty secret by making it easy to understand how you can use it. Here’s everything you need to know about the different ways you can use gloss, sorted by hair color and whether you already color or highlight your hair!

If You Color Your Hair

  • Maintain color and improve results over time
  • Refresh faded lengths and ends
  • Deepen or darken color
  • Correct yellow and red tones that make hair look brassy
  • Add smoothness and shine
  • Deeply condition hair

Why hair gloss is great for you:

Permanent color works by opening your hair shaft to remove natural hair pigments and insert new color pigments. This is great when you’ve just started to color. When you’ve already colored your hair, those strands have been through the permanent process and are already receptive to color, so you can use gloss to maintain it.

On porous hair (you can tell if your hair gets really dark when you first color and then fades very quickly), gloss can actually last longer than permanent color because the color absorbs into the hair and works as a stain. All without opening your hair further (which makes color fade faster), stopping the cycle of coloring more and more to combat fading.

Color Reviving Gloss also doubles as a deep conditioning treatment that makes your hair healthier and able to hold color longer. And it adds a high-gloss shine shows off all colors in their best light. Everything works together to make your hair look and feel better over time!

How to get the benefits:

1. Choose the right color. Hair gloss results depend on the underlying color. So read below for your best choices based on hair color or call the Color Crew, a team of certified colorists and professional stylists who listen carefully and tailor suggestions based on your preferences and hair.

2. Apply permanent color only to roots and hair that has not been colored.

3. Apply matching gloss to the lengths and ends that you’ve colored in the past.

4. Follow instructions to finish hair color process and style as normal.

5. Get ready for questions about your new beauty secret!

If You Highlight Your Hair

  • Refresh over-bleached or faded lengths and ends
  • Correct yellow tones that make highlights look brassy
  • Change or deepen highlights to blend more smoothly with hair color
  • Add smoothness and shine
  • Deeply condition hair

Highlighted hair behaves differently from the rest of your hair because it’s been treated differently. For some people, highlights may have been overly bleached, creating too-light streaks throughout the hair. Even highlights that start out flattering will fade over time and begin to look unnaturally light or unflatteringly yellow. That’s because natural yellow pigments remain in hair after lightening. Hair color adjusts the color by layering violet and ash tones on top to counteract the yellow. When the color fades from highlighted hair, the yellow begins to show again.

Similar to color-treated hair, strands are already receptive to color, so you can use gloss to correct and maintain the tone that you want. You can choose to either counteract the yellow tones without changing the color of your highlights or move towards a more even, overall color.

Color Reviving Gloss also doubles as a deep conditioning treatment which repairs damage caused by bleaching or more harsh methods of lightening hair. This makes your hair healthier and able to hold color longer, which stops the cycle of fading and coloring more and more often. The added high-gloss shine also gives your hair the natural illusion of highlights because it reflects light.

2. Follow instructions to apply and style as normal.

3. Get ready for questions about your new beauty secret!

If You Keep Your Hair Natural

  • Try a new hair color with no permanent color or structural change to your hair
  • Counteract yellow tones in natural gray or white hair
  • Use clear gloss for all the benefits without a color change
  • Add smoothness and shine
  • Deeply condition hair

There are a number of reasons that people don’t color their hair. Some want to experiment with new looks but aren’t ready to make a big, long-term change. Gloss, also known as semi-permanent color, is great in those cases because you can layer smoky, red, or gold tones on top of your hair color for different effects that wash out within 8 shampoos.

For those who celebrate their gray or white hair, gloss can correct the tone of hair to be more flattering without changing the color. Prosecco will add a soft champagne blonde tone that complements warm skin tones, while cool violet Crema will neutralize yellow tones for a silvery color that complements cool skin tones.

Last but not least, all shades of  Color Reviving Gloss double as a deep conditioning treatment and add incredible high-gloss shine. You can get all those benefits without changing hair color by using clear Glassa. All these options open up a whole new world for people who have never thought about coloring their hair before!

How to get the benefits:

1. Choose the right color. Hair gloss results depend on the underlying color. So read below for your best choices based on hair color or call the Color Crew, a team of certified colorists and professional stylists who listen carefully and tailor suggestions based on your preferences and hair.

2. Follow instructions to apply and style as normal.

3. Get ready for questions about your new beauty secret!

5 Hair Health Tips for New Mom

5 Hair Health Tips for New Moms

Disclosure - this post contains affiliate links.

These days, it’s easy to find information about hair care. The challenge is how to sort fact from fiction. Madison Reedis here to help!

Dr. Jan Hansen, a board certified OB/GYN, explains the science behind common questions and popular hair tips so we can all make better decisions for our hair and health.

Hair Health Facts

1. Can I color my hair while pregnant?

It’s interesting to note that the American College of OB/GYN has no recommendations about coloring hair during pregnancy, yet many women are concerned. I chose to color my hair in all three trimesters with all four of my children. I wish that Madison Reed had been available back then. I would have been much more comfortable usingMadison Reed Radiant Color Kit instead of the traditional smelly, harsh dyes.

Everyone’s pregnancy is different, so always consult with your personal physician. I feel Madison Reed products provide a better option and a better experience.

2. Why do some new moms lose so much hair?

Don’t worry, this is normal. Hair grows, rests, and sheds in cycles. During pregnancy, higher estrogen levels alter the hair cycles. The hair continues to grow, while the resting and shedding phases are paused. That’s why hair is longer, thicker, and fuller while pregnant.

After you deliver, the shedding and resting phases resume. All of the hair that would have been shed during the pregnancy can be shed all at once. It can be quite alarming losing clumps of hair! This is normal and within a few months, the hair will return to a normal cycle.

3. Is it true that hair can stretch 30% longer when wet?

Yes! Hair is made of 90% proteins that are held together by chemical bonds. When wet, these bonds are temporarily broken, allowing the hair to stretch and weaken. The bonds reform when dry and shrink back to normal.

4. How can I prevent damage to wet hair?

Because the bonds that hold strands together are temporarily broken, wet hair is vulnerable to damage. Follow these three simple rules to protect your hair. Use a wide-tooth comb or detangling wet brush. Avoid a tight ponytail while your hair is wet. When the hair dries and shrinks back, the ponytail could cause breakage. Wait until your hair is 80-90% dry before styling it.

5. Why do some people grow longer hair than others?

There is a limit to how long each person’s hair can grow, called the terminal length. The terminal length depends on a predetermined growing cycle. It usually is 3-5 years but can be as long as 10! The longer your growing cycle, the longer your hair can get. Considering hair typically grows 6 inches per year, 10 years of growing is really long hair!

While you can’t change genetics, you can protect your long hair by keeping it healthy and strong. Take care when you style your hair and use healthier hair products that can help prevent and repair damage to the hair.

Find your perfect hair color now from Madison Reed and get hair color that is healthy for your hair.

5 DIY Spa Treatments for Your Hair from Madison Reed

5 DIY Spa Treatments for Your Hair from Madison Reed

Disclosure - this post contains affiliate links.

Need a new idea for what to do with those turkey-day leftovers?

Sneaking in a spa getaway before the holidays is easier than you think. Madison Reed wants you to know about these 5 swanky spa treatments for your hair. The best part? These deliciously healthy hair solutions can be found in your own kitchen!

DIY Spa Image

1. Beer is the Silver Bullet for Fine, Limp Hair

Believe it or not, beer is full of protein, which enhances shine, strength, and moisture.

HOW: Just open up a can or bottle and let it sit open for a couple hours to release the carbonation. After you shampoo, gently massage the beer into your hair, let it sit for 5-10 minutes, and then rinse. You can also put the beer in a spray bottle and spritz onto dry hair. The protein residue from the brew will help strengthen your hair.

2. Honey is The Bee’s Knees for Split Ends

Don’t worry, we’re not leading you into a sticky situation, you can safely put honey on your hair! In fact, it can be a miracle worker for damaged hair. Honey is antibacterial, contains vitamins and minerals, and is a humectant, which means that it attracts moisture to improve dry hair.

HOW: Using half a cup of honey, saturate your hair. Put on a shower cap to capture natural heat and put your feet up for half an hour (you deserve it). Rinse out the honey to reveal glowing soft, silky hair. This treatment will help reduce split ends and fly aways.

3. Baking Soda Gets a Rise Out of Your Hair

Time to apply our science class know-how to hair care! Baking soda is an alkaline base (the other end of the spectrum from acids). This is important for hair because excess oils and styling products get trapped in the cuticle of your hair, making it feel greasy and flat. Use baking soda to lift out those unwanted oils and product build up.

HOW: Mix two tablespoons of baking soda with small amounts of water until it forms a thick paste. Work this paste into your hair and let it sit for ten minutes before rinsing. Your hair will gain volume and feel bouncy and clean!

4. Avocado to Bring Down the Frizz

The oils in avocados are very similar to the natural oils in our skin. Combined with its proteins and nutrients, this is one hair-enriching fruit! Use as a smoothing balm to tame frizz and fly aways. In winter months, it can also reduce that annoying seasonal static.

HOW: Mash half an avocado until smooth. Massage into damp hair and leave it on for 20 minutes before rinsing. Your hair will be deeply conditioned. Bonus: if you have curls, this treatment will make them soft and defined.

5. Let the Light in with Yogurt

Yogurt does wonders for dull, lifeless hair. It contains lactic acid, which gently cleans off the environmental film that can build up on our hair, and milk fat, which adds incredible shine.

HOW: Massage a half cup of plain yogurt into damp hair. Put on a shower cap to capture natural heat. After 20 minutes, rinse your hair. Your hair will look like it’s glowing!

Treat yourself to one of these kitchen spa treatments once a week on rotation to relax and get healthy, gorgeous hair. Follow up with Madison Reed Radiant Color Kit that is healthier for your hair for a full beauty routine that leaves you feeling great, inside and out!
